SOS Seafood Fest Launched in Place
January Event Reboots with Focus on Sealife Sustainability
HALF MOON BAY, CALIFORNIA (November 10, 2015) — Like a Dungeness crab molting its shell, the forces of nature have caused the inaugural Half Moon Bay Crab Fest, planned for January 30-31, 2016, to shift its focus for 2016 and be reborn as SOS Seafood Fest: Sustaining Our Seas.
On November 6, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) made an emergency ruling to delay indefinitely the commercial crab season due to high levels of domoic acid, a neurotoxin, found in crabs along the Central and Northern California coast. We recognize the extreme difficulty this poses for our world-class crab fishing fleet and food-serving community and we empathize and ask seafood lovers everywhere to offer their support and positive thoughts for a good, swift outcome, knowing the importance and economic impact of crab season.
In response to the CDFW announcement and after thoughtful deliberation, the organizing team behind Crab Fest have recast the event as SOS Seafood Fest: Sustaining Our Seas, to be held Saturday, January 30, from 10 am to 5 pm.
Among the highlights planned is the SOS Seafood for Thought Chef’s Pavilion, to include celebrity chefs’ demos, talks on ocean warming and sustainability, the seafood chain, and the role of the restaurant industry and food-serving community in helping to shape the future of local seafood. Chefs and speakers will be curated by the Google Food Team led by Teaching Kitchen Program Manager Liv Wu and award-winning Edible Silicon Valley Magazine led by Publisher and Editor Kerri Stenson.
The event, honoring the Half Moon Bay’s major fishing industry and world-class fishing fleet out of Pillar Point Harbor, will be held in Princeton-By-The-Sea, the historic and funky fishing hamlet north of Half Moon Bay, in the sprawling lots around the event’s founding sponsor, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company.
The festival will include food trucks, some from the fantastic Google Food team, serving fabulous fresh, sustainable seafood and other incredible edibles in SOS Food Truck City, and colorful tents sprinkled throughout the event will feature a variety of local Santa Cruz Mountains wines, small batch craft beers and unique SOS special cocktails. The SOS Mavericks Concert Stage, located amidst a magnificent grove of Monterey Cypress trees, will feature a stellar lineup of all-day headliner entertainment featuring The House Rockers, Mustache Harbor, Rumbache and The Lady Crooners. The SOS Cool Coastal Marketplace will offer ocean-inspired arts and crafts, booths by local surf and watersports businesses plus ocean advocacy groups with exhibits and information on marine life, fisheries and sustainability. Kids will flip for the fun and games in the SOS Fin-tastic Funzone.
Food and drink packages will be available for purchase with ticket packages to be available soon on EventBrite.
SOS Seafood Fest: Sustaining Our Seas will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2016, 10 am to 5 pm in Princeton-by-the-Sea, located directly west of Highway 1, about 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay and 24 miles south of San Francisco.
SOS is the international Morse code distress signal being highlighted in our event name to call attention to the current state of ocean life and our need to address and remedy it.
SOS Seafood Fest sponsors include Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, Mavericks Brewing Company, Miramar Events, Google, Bon Appetit Catering, Edible Silicon Valley Magazine, Oceano Hotel & Spa, Half Moon Bay Distillery, Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, and San Mateo County/Silicon Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau.
Conceived by Miramar Events and Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, the event will benefit Mavericks Coastside Foundation, the Cabrillo Education Foundation (CEF) and local organizations working to preserve the coast and its marine life.
There will be an optional donation available at the door with beneficiaries to be announced shortly.
The inaugural Half Moon Bay Crab Fest, now pushed back by one year, is expected to set sail in 2017 on January 28-29.
